Science Training and Research (STaR) Programme
The Science Training and Research (STaR) Programme is the flagship programme of Research@NJC.
A natural step forward upon the completion of the SPIRE programme, students can extend their learning and further their research interest under the programmes offered under the STaR Programme. The programmes under the STaR programme are either local research programmes or overseas research programmes.
These programmes are available for Junior High 3 to Senior High 1 IP students, and also Senior High 1 JAE students.
Senior High 1 students who are keen to explore a career as a researcher can take on the opportunity of reading research as an ‘A’ Level H3 subject under the H3 STaR Programme.

Local Research Programmes

The pinnacle of research programmes, H3 Science Training and Research (H3-STaR) students demonstrate the keen traits of a scientist and have strong intent in heightening their mastery of skills and cognition. H3-STaR students work independently on a research project together with A*STAR scientists over a period of 7 months, and will write and defend their thesis at a viva in their graduating year. -
Students further their pursuit of knowledge by collaborating with scientists from various academic and research institutes. The Enrichment Science Training and Research Programme is a natural extension from SPIRE. More advanced techniques and methods, deeper concepts and work with more extensive impact are the hallmarks of the STaR Programme. Programmes within E-STaR include the International Research Exchange Programme (IREP), Industrial Research in Environment Attachment Programme (IREAP) and the Institute-Based. -
In NJC, all research students in various programmes will participate in Singapore Science & Engineering Fair (SSEF).
Overseas Student Attachment Programme (OSAP) by MOE
Eligible SH1 students can apply for the following overseas attachment programmes:
1. Centre of Excellence in Education Summer Programme , USA (late Jun to 1st week of Aug)
2. International Summer School for Young Physicists, Canada (last 2 weeks of July)

Local Student Attachment Programme (LSAP) by MOE
Eligible SH1 students can apply for the Student Attachment Programmes at Local Research Institutes:
- REsearch Attachment Programme (REAP) at Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) (last week of Nov to first week of Jan, 6 weeks)
- A*STAR-MOE Research Attachment Programme (RAP) at various Research Institutes (RIs) (3rd week of Nov to 3rd week of Dec, 5 weeks)
Students will have the opportunity to be involved in research projects under the mentorship of practicing scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories in established local RIs. Students must commit fully for the duration of the programme that they are applying for.
Application opens in Term 3.
Nanyang Research Programme (NRP)
The Nanyang Research Programme (NRP) and NRP Junior Researcher (NTUjr) are NTU outreach programmes for SH1 students and JH3/4 students respectively. Students students undertake at least 8 months of research activities, either individually or in a pair, under the charge of an NTU faculty member. This programme will culminate in the submission of a Research Paper and a Poster Presentation carried out during the NRP Symposium, held in April annually.
NRP offers a variety of research topics from NTU’s four Colleges – College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences, and College of Business and the National Institute of Education.
SH1 Students can choose to enrol in either the H3 NTU NRP (examinable) or the enrichment version (non-examinable).

Science Research Programme (SRP)
SRP is a NUS outreach programmes for SH1 students. Students get to work on research projects in Life/Medical Sciences, Chemical/Physical Sciences, and Engineering under the guidance of mentors from NUS and established research centres. Similarly, students undertake at least 8 months of research activities. This programme will culminate in the submission of a Research Paper and a Poster Presentation carried out during the SRP Congress, held in April annually.
SH1 Students can choose to enrol in either the H3 NUS SRP (examinable) or the enrichment version (non-examinable).
Application opens in late Jan/early Feb.
SUTD Research Mentorship Programme (RMP)
SUTD offers research project opportunities and provides mentorship to SH1 every year under RMP.
RMP participants will be given special consideration for admissions and scholarships, should they apply to SUTD subsequently.
The timeline for RMP 2019 is as follows:
- Deadline for application submission by schools:
15 Feb
- Selection/interviews by PIs: Anytime between 15 Feb – 1 Mar
- Allocation of projects to successful students: By 8 Mar
- RMP duration: Mar onwards (depending on the project duration determined by faculty)
Applicants will have to undergo a selection process by the project PIs, which may include interviews.
Young Defence Scientists Programme (YDSP)
YDSP is an initiative co-managed by the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and DSO National Laboratories (DSO). YDSP offers various programmes including
Research@YDSP is a 4-month research attachment programme for JH4 to SH1 students. The programme offers students the opportunities to experience research work and work alongside engineers/scientists in a real working/research environment with support from partners such as DSO, Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT), Temasek Labs (TLs), NTU, NUS, SUTD and their research institutes.

Overseas Research Programmes
NJC has eight established IREPs across six different countries. Every IREP offers students the distinctive opportunity of collaborating on a research project with peers from another country, while also immerse themselves in another culture via homestays of their peers. NJC students also get the opportunity to be ambassadors of Singapore and the College by extending their warm hospitality when their peers from another country visits Singapore to work on the research project. This cross-culture research exchange helps broadens perspectives of research and also deepens the global awareness of NJC students. The subject areas of research available in IREP includes Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and the Humanities.

MWITS -NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Mahidol Wittayanusorn School (MWITS)
Through this partnership with one of the leading high schools in Thailand, students will be able to learn advanced mathematical concepts and tools in various areas of Mathematics and computing (such as graph theory and equivalence relations), Chemistry and Biology. They will apply the tools in a related research problem, such as solving an open problem or developing alternative approaches towards existing real- life problems. Students will get the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich Thai culture by interacting with the students from Mahidol.

MCL - NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Moscow Chemical Lyceum (MCL)
Students will explore organic and organometallic synthesis. Specifically, students will carry out advanced experiments in organic and organometallic synthesis for application in the pharmaceutical industry. Also, students will learn advanced analytical methods: infrared and nuclear magnetic spectroscopies are amongst a host of analytical tools used to support the various projects in this programme. Advanced methods in retrosynthesis and mechanisms form the theoretical basis of the work that is done. Students will, while engaged heavily in research, have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Russia, from ballets to plays to enjoying Russian family life via homestays.

WUHSHS - NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Waseda University Honjo Senior High School (WUHSHS)
In its 9th year, the Waseda University Honjo Senior High School – National Junior Science Research Exchange Programme is among the founding programmes in the International Science Research Exchange Programme. Students have the opportunity to explore a range of projects in various fields of Physics. From synthesis, characterisation and analysis of stimuli-responsive polymers to sonoluminescence and its application, students will advance their capacities and interest in materials sciences, spectroscopic methods, electrodynamics and computational methods. Beyond academia, students in this programme will experience Japanese culture both in schools and while hosted by their peers’ families.

RITS - NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Affiliate Schools of The Ritsumeikan Trust (RITS)
2016 marked the inaugural tripartite research exchange between National Junior College, Ritsumeikan Junior and Senior High School from Kyoto, and Ritsumeikan Keisho Junior and Senior High School from Hokkaido. Students in this programme will participate in collaborative research projects relating to Environmental Science. With three schools, at three different geographical locations, students will have opportunities to leverage on the differences afforded by the different environments to explore projects of different themes. Apart from research, students will also have many opportunities to explore and learn about the cultural differences between the two countries.

GSHS - NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Gyeonggi Science High School for the Gifted (GSHS)
Students participating in this exchange programme can look forward to interesting microbiology based projects. They will be exposed to techniques such as culturing baQcteria and optical density measurements and perform biotechnology experiments, such as isolating the gene of interest from organisms and selecting for the cells with the gene of interest. They will also get the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Korea, viz. food (kimchi), language (Hangeul) and homestays.

KSA - NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Korea Science Academy of Kaist (KSA)
In this research exchange programme, students will engage in a range of exciting and cutting-edge projects under the mentorship of prominent scientists affiliated to KAIST – one of the leading universities in South Korea. They will hone their knowledge of chemistry and physics by analyzing reaction mechanisms to understand advanced oxidation processes (ultrasonication-enhanced ozonation). They will also get the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Korea, viz. food (kimchi), language (Hangeul) and homestays.

Overseas Institute: Camborne Science and International Academy (CSIA)
One of our newest partners, Camborne Science and International Academy is a well-acclaimed academic institution in Cornwall, England. In this research exchange programme, students will focus on application and authentic problem solving based research projects. They will study the applications of nanoparticles in different fields of science, e.g. chemiluminescence and biosensing. Students will also get the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich English culture via visits to farms, attending classes and homestays.

SCHS -NJC IREP
Overseas Institute: Suzanne Cory High School (SCHS)

In this research exchange programme, students will be able to collaborate with teachers and students from SCHS to investigate topics in the Arts and the Humanities. They will also get the opportunity to broaden their intellectual and cultural exposure by interacting with the SCHS students.
The students will communicate their research by co-presenting at the International Humanities Symposium.
